How to Make Soothing Licorice Face Serum

Do you want to make a light weight face serum which is quick and moisturizing? Check this out.

This serum has some soothing Licorice extract and Cucumber extract, moisturizing Olivem 300 (It is a water soluble lipid), Glycerin (humectant) and Tamarindus Indica (Green alternative to Hyaluronic acid) and Ylang-Ylang Hydrosol. I have also included Xanthan Gum to stabilize the serum. Since this is a water based product, preservative needs to be added. I have used Geogard ECT here.

I have never used Hyaluronic acid before, wanted to try Tamarindus Indica which is a bit less expensive compared to HA. HA can be added in place of Tamarindus Indica.

Ingredients required:

Ylang-Ylang Hydrosol 90.4% - 18.08g

Licorice Extract 1.5% - 0.3g

Cucumber Extract 1% - 0.2g

Tamarindus Indica 1% - 0.2g

Xanthan Gum 0.1% - 0.02g

Olivem 300 2% - 0.4g

Rose Glycerite 3% - 0.6g

Preservative 1% - 0.2g

Procedure:

1) Xanthan Gum forms lumps when mixed directly. So, it is first hydrated in Glycerin before adding with other ingredients.

2) Add Xanthan Gum and Tamarindus Indica in Rose Glycerite measured. Mix thoroughly to prevent any lumps.
3) Leave it for few minutes to Hydrate. Meanwhile measure other ingredients in a separate beaker or cup.
4) Add hydrated gums to the remaining ingredients, mix it properly and pour in a serum pump container.

How does it feel?

It has a light serum type consistency which dries out quickly in few seconds. It works as a day serum or moisturizer without any greasy feel.

Usage rates (provided by supplier)
  • Licorice extract - 0.7 - 1.5%
  • Cucumber extract - 0.7 - 1.5%
  • Tamarindus Indica - 0.5 -1%
  • Xanthan Gum - 0.1 - 2%
  • Olivem 300 -  1-10%
  • Preservative- Geogard ECT- 0.6 - 1%

Substitutions:

  • Guar Gum or other gum can be added in place of Xanthan gum.
  • Hyarulonic acid is good alternative for Tamarindus Indica.
  • PEG 40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil or Water soluble Shea can be used in place of Olivem 300.
  • Any broad spectrum preservative is a good swap for Geogard ECT.
  • Hydrosol can be of your choice.

Hi.wow nice serum recipe, would love to try.
What will be it's shelf life?
Is it good for oily skin or acne prone skin??

Hello, it will be suitable for oily and acne prone skin too. If you are using rose glycerite, the shelf life would be between 6 months- 1 year. This is as per the expiration of ingredients and formulation. If you would like to know exactly then stability testing would help.
