How to make Hibiscus and Rose Moisturizing Hand Cream
Hand Creams come handy during winter months and due to the frequent washing of hands,
hands tend to dry and become rough. This hand cream helps in moisturizing the hands.
I have added some Hibiscus Glycerite and Rose Infused Almond oil instead of glycerin and oil to get the benefit from flowers.
How did I made Hibiscus Glycerite?
I have infused dried hibiscus flowers for two weeks and filtered it using coffee filter. I will filter it using cheese cloth again since I see few tiny particles of Hibiscus powder. It has beautiful reddish pink colour.
How did I infuse Rose in oil?
I have added dried Rose flowers in sweet almond oil and set it in dark place for two weeks. I have filtered it using coffee filter. It smells Rosy. sweet...
Creams and lotions contain water in large portion. Water and Oils doesn't mix directly. It needs an emulsifier to mix water and oil, which is called Emulsification. I have used Emulsifying Wax NF. General rule of thumb to add Emulsifier is 25% of oil.
Water is life for many microbes. To prevent our creams and lotions from contamination, preservative needs to be added. There are many types of preservatives. I have used Geogard ECT (Natural one) here.
I have added Lanolin, Kokum Butter and Allantoin for soothing and moisturizing properties.
There are three main phases when making cream, lotion, conditioner or any hydrous products.
1) Heated Oil Phase: All the oils, butters, wax, emulsifiers are added. These ingredients are heated until all ingredients are melted properly.
2) Water Phase: All water soluble ingredients(like Glycerine) that can be heated are added here.
3) Cool Down Phase: Ingredients which are sensitive to heat and high temperatures like Hydrolyzed proteins, preservative, E.O's, F.O's etc are added here. These are added when the other phase ingredients are mixed and brought to lower temperatures.
Ingredients required to make the hand cream (50 g batch)
Heated Oil Phase:
Lanolin- 3% ( 1.5 g)
Beeswax- 2% (1 g)
Coconut Oil- 7% (3.5 g)
Almond Oil- 6% (3 g)
Kokum Butter- 2% (1 g)
Arrow root powder- 2% (1 g)
Cetearyl Alcohol- 2% (1 g)
Emulsifying wax NF- 6% (3 g)
Water Phase:
Distilled water- 61.9% (30.95 g) (I have included 10% of water extra here to compensate water loss during heat)
Glycerin- 5% (2.5 g)
Cool Down Phase:
Preservative- 1% (0.5 g)
Vit E-0.1% (0.05 g)
Rose Geranium E.O- 1% (0.5 g)
Allantoin- 1% (0.5 g)
Pinch of Pink color
Procedure:
Add all the heated oil phase and water phase ingredients in two separate beakers.
Heat both the phases on double boiler until all the ingredients are melted.
Once melted, remove the beakers from double boiler and add oil phase into water phase.
Using an immersion blender or coffee frother (only for small batches like 50 g) stir it well until you see a creamy type consistency.
Rest it for 30 seconds and stir it again with blender until the mixture is smooth and thick.
Now, once it cools down and comes to room temperature, add cool down ingredients and mix it well for few seconds. I have added pinch of mica in cool down ingredients and mixed thoroughly.
Pour the cream in an airtight container.
Shelf life:
I generally use my creams within 3-6 months.
Substitutions: (Substituting ingredients will change the texture and skin feel. Also the percentages need to be changed accordingly)
You can substitute coconut and almond oil with any other oils that you like. The ones I have used are light weight and non sticky.
Kokum butter can be substituted with Shea butter or any other soft butter.
Olivem 1000 or other emulsifier can be used instead of Emulsifying Wax NF.
Since the theme is Rose, I have used Rose Geranium E.O. Rose E.O can also be used. But Rose E.O has a different usage rate. Please check usage rate of E.O's before adding it in a product.
You can opt out Allantoin if you don't have one, but it is a soothing ingredient for skin.
