How to Make Simple and Quick Babchi and Gotukula Face Serum (Day Serum)
I am seeing Babchi extracts and Bakuchiol in many skin care products these days. I wanted to give it a try too. I had few acne marks which are caused by a sunscreen. I believe it has some ingredients which I am sensitive. My skin is acne prone and sensitive to few ingredients. So, I wanted to make a serum and cream which have less oil or is water based. I am going to share the serum and cream which I made and noticed good results. I won't say it is an alternative to medicines but is a good DIY to try.
Babchi, also known as Bavanchi vittanalu (Scientific name: Psoralin Corrylifolia) is an Ayurvedi herb used from many years to cure Vitiligo.
Bakuchiol is extracted from Babchi seeds which has gained popularity as natural alternative of retinol.
Gotukula, also known as Brahmi, Saraswathy (Scientific name: Indian Pennywort, Centella asiatica) has been used to support the health of skin, hair and nails in India.
It may help reduce stretch marks.
Promotes would healing and minimize scarring.
I have added one tablespoon of

I have added Green Tea Extract to add some soothing benefits. It is a source of antioxidants and known to improve skin health.
Ingredients Required and Weights: (10 gram batch)
- Babchi and Gotukula Glycerite ( 5% - 0.5g)
- Green Tea Extract (1% - 0.1g)
- Guar Gum (0.2% - 0.02g)
- Distilled and Boiled Water (93.4% - 9.34g)
- Preservative (0.4% - 0.04g)
How to Make a Babchi and Gotukula Glycerite?
Babchi and Gotukola powder
(fine powder) in a bottle and filled
with 100% Glycerin till the
powder is dissolved. Generally
70% or 80% Glycerin is added,
rest filled with water. But, I chose
to make 100% Glycerin infusion.
Kept it in dark place, agitated it
every day for 7 days and then
filtered it after 7 days using
cheese cloth and funnel. I have added 0.8% preservative after filtering it.
Note:
It is fun to experiment with fresh fruits, flowers and dried herbs but few things need to
considered. I have mentioned some of them below.
- Commercial extracts have efficacy and pre-determined active ingredients. But, when an extract is made at home, we may not know the exact active ingredients in it and can also be contaminated if proper GMP is not followed.
- Organic Flowers or Fruits can only be used for Glycerites and not one with the pesticides.
- Fresh fruits needs to be washed properly and dried before adding to Glycerites.
- Glycerin to Water ratio differs for different Glycerites.
- Adding preservative will prevent any bacterial contamination but is not mandatory.
- Sanitize the jars and Spatulas that will be used for making Glycerite.
- Always follow Good Manufacturing Practices.
- Though Glycerites are stable for 6 months to 1 year sometimes it might be contaminated, Discard the Glycerites if you see a difference in smell or color or see some particles.
- When you want to sell the products with home made Glycerites, get the product tested for efficacy, stability and preservation.
How to make the serum?
I have heated my water in advance. Heating water for 15-20 minutes is known to kill microbes.
Add 9.34g distilled water in the beaker
2. Add 0.1g Green tea extract and 0.5g Glycerite.
3. Next goes the Guar gum of 0.02g. Adding gum is not compulsory. I added to thicken the
serum. Check the section below for alternatives.
4. To preserve this and store for more than a week, we need to add preservative. I have added
0.04g Geogard ECT.
5. Stir it thoroughly, leave for few minutes to hydrate and pour in glass jar.
How to use it?
I have been using it everyday morning and night from 3 weeks. I see my acne scars fading
slowly and a boost to my skin.
Apply few drops on face and neck and gently massage. It has a bit tacky feel because of Guar
gum and no silicones added. So, less is more.
Substitutions:
- Hydrosol can be added instead of water or part of water. It gives some herbal benefits and scent to the product.
- Other extract like Licorice root or Chamomile can be added in place of Green tea extract.
- Xanthan Gum is a good substitute for Guar gum.
- Any other broad spectrum preservative like Optiphen, Liquid Germal Plus can be used in place of Geogard ECT.
Shelf life:
It should be good for 3 months.
