How to make Vegan Chocolate Lip Scrub and Rose & Peppermint Lip Scrub
Lip Scrubs are simple and easy to make. But, why are Scrubs used?
Scrubs exfoliate skin gently, thereby removing the dead skin cells, leaving skin soft and supple.
Exfoliating lips once a week prevents lips to be flaky.
Scrubs contain exfoliating ingredients. It can be granulated sugar or cane sugar. For
moisturizing effects, oils, butters are added. To hold the ingredients tightly, wax is generally
added. Wax is not mandatory but gives a firmer texture.Lip flavor oils can be added for flavor
and lip safe pigments for color. Oils that have color or infused oils can be used for a tint
instead of pigments. Natural Powders can also be combined. It is personal preference. But,
there is a chance of contamination with some herbal powders which needs to be considered
while adding one. Preservative is not mandatory because it is anhydrous. If you want to be
extra careful, oil soluble lip safe preservative like Geogard ECT may be added. Again,
preservative usage rates will differ for lip products. Don't put 1% directly. I would suggest to
check with manufacturer for additional details.
Today we will be making two lip scrubs, one vegan chocolate one (tastes good too :P) and
other one Rose & Peppermint lip scrub. I have used Argan oil in my Rose & Peppermint lip
scrub which has a distinct smell. First smell the oil, if you are okay, then only add it.
Peppermint oil doesn't completely mask the Argan oil smell and flavor.
Let's check the ingredients required to make these scrubs.
Ingredients for Vegan Chocolate Lip Scrub: (10g batch)
Granulated Sugar 5g
Coconut Oil 1g
Castor Oil 1g
Almond Oil 0.5g
Cocoa Butter 2g
Carnauba Wax 0.4g
Cocoa Powder 0.1g
Ingredients for Rose & Peppermint Lip Scrub: (12g batch)
Granulated Sugar 7g
Rosehip Oil 0.5g (heat sensitive)
Argan Oil 0.46g (heat sensitive)
Alkanet infused Coconut Oil 1.48g
Shea Butter 2g
Beeswax 0.5g
Peppermint E.O 0.03g
Vitamin E 0.03g
Procedure:
1) Melt down the wax and butters in a beaker along with coconut oil.
Note: Do not heat Rosehip oil and Argan oil because those are heat sensitive oils.
2) Add remaining oils, E.O, Vitamin E and powders. Stir it to mix properly.
3) Add granulated sugar and stir softly. If the mixture is hot, it will melt the sugar . Wait for
few minutes and mix it.
4) Pour it in lip balm tin container. In sometime, it gets solid.
Shelf Life:
This should be good for 6 months to 1 year depending on oils used.
Always get a stability test done if you want to sell the product.
Substitutions:
1) Waxes, Oils and Butters can be substituted according to personal preference.
2) Coffee powders or Cane sugar or Brown Sugar are good alternatives for Granulated Sugar.
3) Only add Lip Safe Flavor oils or Essential oils. Usage rate is also very less when it comes to
lip and face products.
