How to make Colorful and relaxing Bath Salts using Natural Solubilizer Sepiclear G7

Do you like minty or Eucalyptus scented salts for foot soak or as relaxing bath salts? I definitely like it, specially when I am tired or exhausted. It is easy and no-brainer to make bath salts without essential oil. But, when you want to add essential oil, you want to add solubilizer to prevent concentrated exposure of essential oils and to prevent stains on the tubs or buckets.

Solubilizer in simple terms:

Solubilizer is also a surfactant which helps in mixing oil and water similar to emulsifier but it doesn't form the whitish milky consistency. It helps the watery product stay transparent.

Generally, Polysorbate 80 is used as a solubilizer for solubilizing little amount of oil into water based products. But, Polysorbate 80 is PEG derived and is not approved for natural skin care. I am not against Polysorbates but speaking about what is accepted in natural terms.

Natrosorb (modified Tapioca starch) is a great alternative for synthetic solubilizers.

Coming to natural solubilizers, there are number of natural solubilizers like Symbio®Solv Clear Plus, Sepiclear G7 etc. Surfactants like Decyl Glucoside or Capryl Capryl Glucoside can also be used as solubiliser for tiny amount of oils. I could get access only to Sepiclear G7 here.

About Sepiclear G7:

Sepiclear G7 is a 100% natural and sustainable solubilizer derived from sugar and castor seeds. Sepiclear G7 (INCI: Heptyl Glucoside) is a concentrated non-ionic surfactant that is readily biodegradable.

The ingredient solubilizes lipophilic compounds, like essential oils, perfumes and vitamin E, in aqueous media. Unlike other natural solubilizers, it does not produce foam.

Other ingredients used:

I have used Epsom Salt, Table Salt and Himalayan Pink Salt even before for relaxing foot soak salts. These are a great combination which my mom use whenever she has foot pain after a stressful day.

Mica's aren't compulsory but gives a nice look. Natural colorants like Annatto, Alkanet or Turmeric can be used. But, should keep in mind if these are skin safe and are in prescribed limits. Turmeric can stain skin if used at higher rates.

Ingredients required:

  • Himalayan Pink Salt
  • Epsom Salt
  • Table Salt
  • Sepiclear G7 Solubilizer
  • Essential Oils
  • Mica's, Kasturi Manjal

Ratio's and weights for different salts: (50g)

How to make these?

1) Measure the essential oils and solubilizer in a beaker.

2) Add mica and stir it to mix everything.

3) Add salts as per the measurements, mix everything and pour in beautiful glass vials.

Suggestions:

If you are using different essential oil or solubilizer, you have to test with different ratios like 1:4 (i.e. 1 part of essential oil with 4 parts of solubilizer) or 1:5 or 1:2 and see if the essential oil and mica are miscible with water and if it leaves any traces on bath tub or bucket.

Substitutions:

1) Himalayan Pink Salts, Epsom Salts and Table Salts can be replaced with the salts you prefer.

2) Colorants and Essential Oils can be of your choice but check for skin safe ingredients and also the usage rate for bath products (with supplier).

3) Polysorbate 80 can be used in place of Sepiclear but ratio of essential oil to solubilizer will be different. It can only be determined by experimenting with different ratios.
