DIY Bubbly Frangipani Hand Wash

Hi Everyone, I made hand wash few weeks back since we ran out of store bought hand wash. I love the hand wash and I wouldn't go back to store bought one any soon. This is a cold processed one, means you need not heat anything. You can heat and hold water but is optional. If you would also like to make a hand wash for yourself or for friends, check this out.

Ingredients used:
This hand wash has three surfactants Alpha Olefin Sulfonate (anionic surfactant), Coco Glucoside (non-ionic surfactant) and Coco Betaine (Amphoteric surfactant). These combination make it bubbly, mild for hands but cleansing. Changing the ratios or combination can yield to different results.
Hydrovance and Polyquat 7 are moisturizing ingredients which reduces the dry feel after wash.
Euxyl K712 is a natural preservative. Other broad spectrum preservatives can also be used but need to check the compatibility with the surfactants.
Fragrance added is Frangipani. It adds nice scent and also an yellowish color to the hand wash.
Salt is the thickener here. I have added 2% which is the maximum amount. Salt used is normal table salt. Do not add more than 2% else it can reduce viscosity rather than adding up. Add 1%, see how it thickens with other salt and then add more 1% if required. If 1% is sufficient, add rest 1% water. Alpha Olefin Sulfonate and Coco betaine combination increase viscosity with salt. (Check about salt curve if you would like to know how and why it increases viscosity, there are number of articles)
Substitutions:
  1. Decyl glucoside can be used in place of Coco glucoside but the type of foam can differ.
  2. Cocamidopropyl Betaine can be used instead of Coco Betaine.
  3. Glycerin or Propanediol 1,3 can be added for Hydrovance but I personally feel it has good moisturizing feel when compared to other.
  4. Any broad spectrum preservative compatible with these surfactants can be used like Geogard ECT.
  5. Fragrance is of personal choice. But it wouldn't be a Frangipani hand wash if we change the F.O.
Active Matter:
ASM for this handwash is 14.6% which is perfectly okay for handwash and body wash.
Do you want to know how I have calculated ASM, check similar calculations in DIY Sulfate free shampoo

How to make it?
  • Add Phase A ingredients in a beaker/container and Phase B ingredients in another container.
  • Slowly add Phase A to Phase B and stir gently.
  • Add Phase C ingredients and stir again gently. You need not worry if it incorporates bubbles, it will settle down in a day.
  • Add salt slowly and mix it to dissolve salt. You can see the hand wash thickening.
  • Now add lactic acid (I have added 10 drops first), check pH and add few more (adjust accordingly to ph 5.5).

  • Leave it covered for sometime to thicken and to settle down bubbles.
  • Pour into a pump bottle and Yay, we have made a hand wash in less than 20 minutes :)
