Natural Foaming Facewash with active ingredients
I have received lot of questions and
queries after I posted video on foaming facewash. It has foaming apple which is
a bit pricey compared to other surfactants. So I have made this with another
natural surfactant which has good foam even without foaming bottle and it is
not pricey.
This face wash also has Magnesium Ascorbyl
Phosphate ( form of Vitamin C). So this can be called as Vitamin C Natural Facewash.
I would suggest to give this a try if you
have oily or acne prone skin specially. This is a savior in summer.
Other ingredients in it:
It includes Zinc PCA which is
beneficial for oily skin.
Cranberry extract has anti-oxidants and some
Vitamin C. This also gives a beautiful color to the facewash.
Glycerin is a humectant which retains
moisture on skin.
Green tea extract is soothing to the skin.
It has anti-inflammatory properties.
Surfactants used are Sodium Cocoyl
glutamate (SCG) & amino acid blend, Coco Betaine. Sodium Cocoyl glutamate is
anionic surfactant which lifts dirt from skin and is a foaming ingredient. It
is mild and suitable for many skin types. Since it is a liquid surfactant, it
is easy to incorporate.
Coco betaine is amphoteric surfactant which
when used in combination with other surfactants produces good foam and also
increases mildness.
To adjust the pH, we are using lactic acid.
Preservative used is Euxyl K 712 which is a
natural preservative but works effective below pH 5.5.
I have used water soluble Watermelon F.O from Aethon to give it a fruity fragrance. It can be substituted with any other essential oil or fragrance oil in combination with solubilizer.
Sodium gluconate is a chelating ingredient which increases stability of the product also helps in increasing foam for hard water.
Substitutions:
When we substitute any ingredient, it may not have exact same texture or feel but it will have a similar one. Substitutions are listed so that you can use the ingredients that you have or that you can get rather than buying new ones.
Coming to the substitutions for this one,
Disodium Cocoyl Glutamate can be used for SCG + Amino acid blend.
Propanediol 1,3 for Glycerin
Citric acid for lactic acid
EDTA for Sodium gluconate
Geogard ECT or Liquid Germall Plus for Euxyl K 712
Extracts, fragrance oils can be of your choice depending on theme and like.
Who can use it?
This can be used by oily and acne prone skin specially during summers.
(I make products mostly for oily skin because the temperatures are mostly high in India specifically in Hyderabad which cause oiliness and excess sweat. Products which doesn't cause dryness but are useful in hot climate are less)
This facewash can be used daily twice or once depending on skin.
Ingredients required:
5.8% Active matter , pH 5.5
SCG+ Amino acid blend 8%
Coco Betaine 10%
Phase B:
Glycerin 3.5%
Cranberry extract 0.2%
Phase C: (Heated phase)
Distilled Water 63% (+10% of 63% for the water lost, you can alternatively measure weight of it before heating and top up with water later when brought off heat)
MAP 1%
Phase D:
Distilled Water 10% (Distilled water is added in two phases because the ingredients are pH sensitive)
Zinc PCA 0.5%
Sodium gluconate 0.1%
Phase E:
Green tea extract 0.5%
Watermelon F.O 1.5%
Euxyl K 712 1.5%
Lactic acid 0.2%
Procedure:
1) Measure Phases individually in seperate beakers or cups.
- For Phase B, stir extract in glycerin so that it doesn't form lumps or settle down in the product.
- Heat Phase C until MAP dissolves in water
- Phase D can also be heated.
- Dissolve Zinc PCA and Sodium gluconate in water for Phase D by stirring gently.
2) Add Phase B, heated Phase C, Phase D and Phase E in Phase A beaker.
3) Slowly stir to mix.
4) Check the pH of the product and adjust to 5.5
5) Pour in a foaming pump bottle.
Why pH should be around 5.5?
MAP works better between pH 5.5-7 while for Zinc PCA , pH should be between 5-6. We can adjust pH to 6 but the preservative Euxyl K 712 is efficient when pH is under 5.5.
If you are using Germall plus or other broad spectrum preservative, pH can be adjusted to 6 which is perfect.
